TechTarget CEO Greg Strakosch Named to “Folio: 40” List of “Industry Innovators with Impact”
Visionary Approach to Content Disrupted Industry Dominated by Print-centric Publishing
NEEDHAM, Mass. --April 5, 2005—Information technology (IT) media company TechTarget announced today that co-founder and CEO Greg Strakosch has been named to Folio magazine’s “Folio:40” list of top innovators and influencers in the publishing industry. Strakosch is one of only ten “C-Level Visionaries” or “executives whose ideas and creativity, along with successful implementation, have driven the business in surprising new directions." Folio: cited Strakosch’s role in building TechTarget into a multi-platform media outlet that delivers targeted content in print, events, and online. Strakosch was the only C-level IT media executive to appear on the Folio:40, and one of only two IT publishing executives on the entire list.
The Folio: 40 is the publishing industry’s oldest and most prestigious list of top innovators and influencers. The list highlights ten publishing professionals in each of four categories: C-Level Visionaries, Director-Level Doers, Under the Radar, and Industry Innovators. Folio: editorial staff chose the honorees for the 2005 Folio: 40 based on “quantifiable results that demonstrate the impact of their ideas and initiatives.”
Among the other luminaries making the 2005 list are Ann Moore, chairman and CEO of Time, Inc.; Elizabeth Keffer, publisher of The Atlantic Monthly; and Hubert Boyle, President and COO of Bauer Publishing, USA.
A History of Boldness in Strategy and Execution
“TechTarget has made its name making bold pronouncements and even bolder moves,” the Folio: staff wrote. “From the start, it shook up magazine publishers with a Web-first approach to content and communities in the giant, but hurting IT space.”
Just last year, Strakosch took the industry by surprise by engineering a series of strategic moves:
- Attracted $85 million in venture capital funding. The size of the initial $70 million funding and the target spurred talk of a revival of VC interest in the sector and IPO rumors for TechTarget. The investment fueled a fast-paced series of organic launches, acquisitions, and international deals.
- Hired Joe Levy, founder of IDG’s CXO Media Group and former president and CEO of IDG Communications, and Maryfran Johnson, former editor in chief of IDG’s Computerworld, to launch the only magazine targeted at CIOs and senior-level IT executives in the midmarket, CIO Decisions.
- Acquired white paper provider Bitpipe. Overnight, TechTarget became the majority owner of the market for the distribution of IT white papers and other vendor-supplied content, serving a larger number of IT professionals and executives than all other IT publishers combined.
- Expanded to Asia. TechTarget’s first move was a partnership with ChinaByte to launch TechTarget China, followed by the launch of Information Security Taiwan. This year, TechTarget inked a partnership with ITmedia, a Softbank Group company, to launch TechTarget Japan.
