    Backup and archiving are two different animals. A backup is designed to restore data to a specific point in time following an outage. Archives, on the other hand, are designed to store data that is not currently in use but cannot be deleted for extended periods of time. In addition, an archive must be searchable, so specific information can be retrieved within a reasonable amount of time. For example, all of the emails from a specific employee, within a specific timeframe in the event of a legal discovery request.
