  • Top cloud and data center technologies win Impact Awards

Plenty of data center technologies enter the market, aiming to solve this problem or that problem. (Or every problem, if the hype is to be believed.) But which products really hit the mark? Which ones stand out, coming along at just the right moment to address just the right need? Those are the kinds of products that garner attention in the annual Modern Infrastructure Impact Awards, and now is the time to name names. This issue unveils the 2017 Impact Award winners for the top cloud computing and data center technologies and services as selected by editors, independent experts and Modern Infrastructure readers. These participants assessed the tools they found worthy of recognition in categories ranging from best converged and hyper-converged product to best cloud migration and optimization offering to top systems management tool. To be eligible, a product needed to be either new to the market or substantially upgraded within the past year. And when the best of them distinguish themselves, that's when they warrant attention from the Modern Infrastructure awards. This issue of Modern Infrastructure also looks at artificial intelligence -- past the lofty speculation and into its possible real-world implications -- as well as the transformation going on in the server backup market. Continue Reading

  • IT wrestles with mobile privacy, security concerns

You can't hang a "Do not disturb" sign on a mobile device. But users want their privacy when it comes to working on smartphones and tablets. IT must figure out how to balance their personal privacy with the ability to secure corporate apps and data on those devices. In this month's cover story, editor in chief Colin Steele dives into the issue of privacy in the mobile age.

For the strongest mobile security, IT shops should take a layered approach, says columnist Eric Klein this month. Another column looks at why IT should make data storage and processing a priority in their mobility strategy. Plus, one of the newest ways to deliver and manage mobile resources is through workspaces -- an emerging technology that Jack Madden explains in depth. Finally, we recap the Best of Citrix Synergy Awards winners from this year's conference.

  • The future of WAN optimization: SD-WAN

Network managers today are less likely to be sweating over how traffic from traditional applications like SharePoint performs over the wide area network (WAN) compared to cloud apps that users access via the Internet.

This shift, along with enterprises' desire to eliminate or reduce the number of expensive MPLS links they use, is prompting WAN optimization vendors to pivot their strategies. Their new focus is software-defined WAN (SD-WAN), a concept that attempts to combine the benefits of WAN optimization and software-defined networking by virtualizing the WAN. The goal for companies using SD-WAN is to enable network managers to aggregate multiple Internet connections so that they function as a single virtual overlay that provides a level of performance and reliability on par with private WAN connectivity.

In this issue of Network Evolution, explore the promise of SD-WAN, why enterprises are interested in it and what it means for the future of WAN optimization.

Also in this issue, learn more about why collaboration and unified communications (UC) are being increasingly pushed out of desktop clients and into Web browsers. We dig into the pros and cons, and hear from enterprise IT pros who share their real-world experiences with browser-based UC.

Finally, cut through the hype and horror stories about security threats in the Internet of Things (IoT). We catch up with several enterprises that have deployed IoT and find out how they're using their networks as the first line of defense.
