The 6.0 release of PowerShell in January 2018 differed from previous versions in several ways that administrators need to familiarize themselves with.
In August 2016, Microsoft converted the automation and configuration management tool into an open source project and announced it would be ported to Linux and macOS platforms. Administrators can run Windows PowerShell and PowerShell Core on the same machine as the latter begins to reach feature parity. Microsoft says support for Windows PowerShell will continue indefinitely, but the features in that version will remain fixed.
