HPE Cloud Volumes Backup consolidates data formats

HPE Cloud Volumes Backup provides common data format for Commvault, TrendMicro, Veeam and Veritas backups to serve secondary workloads in the public cloud.

The HPE cloud storage story added a new chapter on data protection.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise used its HPE Discover virtual event to launch HPE Cloud Volumes Backup, which converts proprietary backup data sets to a common data format. That allows multiple data sets to be applied to secondary workloads running public cloud compute.

HPE Cloud Volumes Backup incorporates the Recovery Manager Central software used in HPE StoreOnce backup appliances. The stack includes HPE Catalyst, a global source-side deduplication engine that also protects HPE StoreOnce backups against ransomware attacks.

Commvault, TrendMicro, Veeam and Veritas were listed as supported vendors, but HPE said Cloud Volumes Backup will add support for data formats of other backup vendors.

"We want to be the fourth major cloud," said Sandeep Singh, vice president of HPE storage marketing.

HPE InfoSight predictive analytics automates service levels to ensure availability and capacity thresholds for each application or data set. Singh said Cloud Volumes Backup building blocks are available in different configurations with HPE GreenLake consumption pricing.

Consolidating cloud data

The backup capability adds a wrinkle to hosted HPE Cloud Volumes low-latency block storage that moves data automatically without Egress charges between HPE colocation racks and hyperscale providers. HPE picked up Cloud Volumes through its Nimble Storage acquisition in 2017.

Phil Goodwin, a research vice president for cloud data protection at analyst firm IDC, said the backup integration enables HPE Cloud Volumes to work across backup platforms.

"Most organizations use more than one backup product. They have different backup products for different workloads. What HPE has done is to take the backup set, regardless of which vendor format it's in, and make it a common format in Cloud Volumes. That's pretty powerful," Goodwin said.

HPE's cloud has a high degree of security to serve as a consolidation platform, said Christophe Bertrand, a senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group.

"HPE Cloud Volumes Backup isn't backup as a service. What it does is provide a unified cloud destination for consolidating all your backup data in the HPE cloud. You have all your data in the cloud to unlock the value of that data and start doing analytics on it," Bertrand said.
