Veeam backup software just 'Right' for background check provider

HireRight likes the simplicity of the Veeam Availability Suite and its use in complying with GDPR. Testing has proven the backup software meets HireRight's needs.

A background check provider has hired Veeam Software and its flagship Availability Suite for the important job of backing up sensitive data.

HireRight LLC, based in Irvine, Calif., has been using Veeam backup software for a little over a year. The software protects 5,000 virtual machines -- or 1.2 petabytes -- using Nimble Storage snapshots. HireRight has a pair of data centers in Europe and two new data centers in the United States.

Elliott Peterson, vice president of global IT for HireRight, said the Veeam backup software saves time and money. HireRight's IT staff doesn't spend as much time managing backups -- it saves about 80 hours a week, to be exact, in the form of two employees who had previously focused on backup and recovery and switched to other key roles. HireRight has shifted to a completely virtualized platform and moved off of the costlier process of using tape for backup.

"The biggest advantage is it's simple," said Peterson.

As an example, during testing, HireRight engineers restored databases essentially on their own without needing to be too familiar with the Veeam backup software in advance. It didn't take months to train the engineers, Peterson said.

HireRight previously used Symantec Backup Exec.

Compliance is key

HireRight, which provides pre-employment background checks, drug testing and education verification, has more than 40,000 customers in 200 countries. The company has about 3,000 employees in 17 offices around the world.

HireRight's sensitive data requires compliance with a number of regulations, including the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which went into effect in May 2018 and includes new data privacy and security rights for European Union (EU) citizens and companies that store data in the EU. With the Veeam backup software, HireRight can back up data in the European Union separately from data in the United States for GDPR compliance purposes, according to Peterson.

Also in May 2018, Veeam launched its new vision of Intelligent Data Management for the Hyper-Available Enterprise. The platform includes backup, aggregation, visibility of data, orchestration and automation.

Veeam DataLabs is one way the vendor expanded its data management capabilities last May. Part of the Veeam Availability Suite, Veeam DataLabs is a copy data management feature that creates copies of production environments for uses beyond standard data protection. An organization can examine and classify data, for example, to help it comply with regulations such as GDPR.

Peterson said he thinks the platform will help HireRight with GDPR compliance.

"The roadmap for intelligent data management, I think, is the right approach," Peterson said. "All in all, it sounds really promising."

HireRight also uses Zerto -- which provides disaster recovery and business continuity software for virtualized and cloud environments -- for replication, Peterson said.

During testing for application migration, HireRight experienced some instances of data corruption and was able to recover with the Veeam backup software. "We've tested it," Peterson said. "It works."
