Lenovo bets enterprises want new servers but no virtualization shakeup

New ThinkAgile systems, validated configurations and deployment services target the operational complexity of enterprise infrastructure refreshes.

Lenovo on Wednesday unveiled new virtualization infrastructure, validated configurations and deployment services designed to help enterprises modernize their IT environments without changing the platforms that run them.

For IT teams planning a server refresh, the decision can extend beyond hardware: Keep the virtualization platform they know or absorb the cost and disruption of moving to another one. Lenovo's portfolio targets customers who want to modernize infrastructure without taking on that migration work at the same time.

The portfolio includes the ThinkAgile VX850 V4; expanded Express Solutions for Microsoft, Nutanix, Red Hat and SUSE environments; and three tiers of deployment services.

Omdia research found that 69% of North American organizations are evaluating alternatives to replace their primary hypervisor, according to Scott Sinclair, practice director for infrastructure, cloud and DevOps at Omdia.

Licensing costs and concerns about lock in drive some of those evaluations, Sinclair said. A global memory shortage also has complicated server refreshes, leading some organizations to delay a platform change or migrate virtualization software onto existing hardware.

"I'm seeing both, but I wouldn't assume every hardware refresh is a platform migration. Enterprises are evaluating alternatives as they plan their next infrastructure cycle, while many will keep the software and operating practices they already know," said Stephanie Walter, practice leader for AI Stack at HyperFrame Research.

The hidden cost of changing platforms

The hardest part of a virtualization migration can sit outside the virtualization software itself. Customers have built years of operational expertise around their existing platforms, said Scott Patti, vice president of Lenovo's Infrastructure Solutions Group.

"One of the biggest headwinds for a customer to make a change is the operational muscle that they've built within their organizations, right? So, [for] a customer who's … living in VMware, VMware tools, all day every day, Nutanix tools all day, every day, Microsoft, all day, every day, it's a pretty significant transition to sort of reskill their own internal IT operations to move to a new technology," Patti said.

That expertise spans monitoring, backup, security, automation and troubleshooting, according to Walter. "Moving to another platform means testing workloads and rebuilding some of those practices. The migration plan has to account for people and processes, not just VM compatibility," she said.

That helps explain why enterprises can refresh servers without replacing the virtualization layer. "There's not always a tight coupling between an infrastructure refresh and a potential changeout of your virtualization and environment, right?" Patti said.

Customers get to choose

Lenovo is building its portfolio around customers' existing environments rather than pushing them toward one platform. "We don't show up and try to drive a customer down one path or another," Patti said. "We try to meet all of our customers where they are in their journeys."

Lenovo's Express Solutions cover Microsoft Hyper V and Windows Server, Microsoft Azure Local with ThinkAgile MX V4, Nutanix Compute Cluster on ThinkSystem, Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization and SUSE Virtualization on ThinkSystem V4.

"Right now, the most valuable thing an infrastructure provider, like Lenovo, can do is provide choice to its customers," Sinclair said. "Validated infrastructure reduces the risk IT teams undergo when deploying new platform options."

The options reflect different operating models, Walters said. OpenShift Virtualization and SUSE bring virtual machines and containers together. Azure Local extends Microsoft's hybrid approach, while Nutanix offers an alternative virtualization option.

The range doesn't mean enterprises will run every platform, Walter said. They can choose based on workloads, existing skills and long-term operating requirements.

Validation cuts integration work

Lenovo also wants to reduce the work between buying infrastructure and putting it into production. The company validates hardware and software combinations for compatibility, performance, firmware, drivers and deployment procedures.

"You know it's configured properly, it's going to work," Patti said. "Like, we're working on, again, avoiding that overhead for a customer of trying to figure that out on their own."

Walter said validation can simplify hardware selection and deployment, particularly for organizations evaluating new platforms. It doesn't eliminate the work that follows. "IT teams still have to manage updates, investigate performance issues and understand who supports each part of the stack," she said.

VX850 targets high memory workloads

The ThinkAgile VX850 V4 is a specialized, four-socket system designed for highly virtualized environments and demanding in-memory workloads, including larger in-memory database deployments.

Patti said the system isn't for every enterprise. Lenovo offers other systems for general-purpose workloads.

ThinkAgile uses the same underlying ThinkSystem hardware while narrowing the hardware choices and configurations customers must evaluate.

AI follows infrastructure modernization

AI sits behind Lenovo's modernization pitch rather than at the center of the announcement.

Simplifying legacy infrastructure can free up IT teams to work on newer applications, Patti said. "Part of it is reducing the overhead in our customers' legacy application environments, giving them the time and capacity to focus on new and emerging workloads, which right now are primarily AI," he said.

Walter said enterprises might not need one virtualization platform across their environments as they add AI, cloud-native and other newer applications.

For Lenovo, the approach lets the company sell infrastructure across multiple virtualization platforms while taking on more integration and deployment work.

For IT teams, the question is less about choosing one virtualization stack for the entire data center and more about matching platforms to workloads without adding unnecessary operational burden.

Faster deployment

Lenovo is offering three deployment service tiers for the new systems: Standard Deploy, Premier Deploy and Premier Deploy Plus.

All provide readiness work and hardware installation. Premier Deploy and Premier Deploy Plus add implementation and operational handoff. Premier Deploy Plus also includes extended post-deployment assistance and a one-year infrastructure health assessment.

Lenovo pairs those services with Top Choice Express, which limits hardware configurations to speed fulfillment.

Lenovo targets delivery within 10 business days, Patti said. The systems are built to order, so component availability can affect delivery.
