Several data backup and recovery startups are making their mark in an already crowded market by offering products and services that address a varied, but specific, range of workloads and applications. From protecting Salesforce, AWS workloads and VMware VMs to providing backup and DR for Kubernetes, each of the five vendors profiled here offers its own unique approach to backup and recovery.
Here, we examine backup and recovery offerings from Cloud Daddy Inc., Clumio Inc., HYCU Inc., Kasten Inc. and OwnBackup. Learn about the features and functionality of these products and services and how each vendor distinguishes itself from competitors in the data backup and recovery market.

Cloud Daddy Inc. specializes in backing up AWS resources, including Elastic Compute Cloud instances, Elastic Block Store data, Relational Database Service databases, DynamoDB, and Aurora and RedShift clusters.
Cloud Daddy takes a unique approach to cloud data protection. Rather than focusing solely on backup logistics, like other backup vendors, it takes a three-tier approach to data protection: backup and DR, advanced security, and infrastructure management.
Key features include automated snapshot management, AWS storage cost estimates for backups and replication jobs, and the ability to back up on-premises resources to AWS. The company's cloud data protection includes a firewall management dashboard, triggered events and the ability to automatically create a backup any time unusual activity is detected.
Cloud Daddy offers four cloud data protection plans, with rates based on monthly, biannual or annual billing. The company's Starter package covers up to 20 AWS instances, five AWS accounts and tenants, and 20 users. The Growth package allows for up to 50 AWS instances, 10 accounts and tenants, and 40 users. The Enterprise plan covers up to 100 AWS instances, 30 accounts and tenants, and 120 users. Cloud Daddy also offers an Elastic plan for companies with more demanding needs.

Clumio Inc. markets itself as providing SaaS data protection for an all-cloud world. Clumio protects VMware VMs, regardless of whether they're running on premises or in the VMware cloud on top of AWS.
Clumio strives to drive down backup costs by reducing the complexity of managing infrastructure. The company advertises its backup software as being "set it and forget it," which greatly reduces the administrative burden associated with backups.
In addition to secure data protection, Clumio provides automatic scaling, centralized backup policy management and tools for helping assess regulatory compliance.
Clumio's pricing plan is designed to take some of the guesswork out of billing. The company charges based only on the number of VMs they provision -- not on the size of the VMs -- but Clumio doesn't disclose specific pricing details.
The company also offers Clumio Backup for AWS Native Services.

HYCU Inc. was spun off from the Comtrade Group into its own company in 2018. It currently has offices in the U.S., Europe and Australia. The company provides a complete backup offering for protecting resources in the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud.
HYCU for Nutanix was specifically designed to be efficient and easy to use. The company claims that it only takes four minutes to learn how to use the software, which can be deployed in three minutes, with recoveries taking less than two minutes.
HYCU places a major emphasis on application awareness and provides self-service recovery capabilities that enable users to backup and recover application data on an as-needed basis. The software also includes a dashboard that administrators can use to monitor policy compliance, backup jobs and other events.
HYCU also offers data protection for VMware, Google Cloud Platform and Azure.
HYCU pricing for Nutanix starts at $1,500 per socket, or customers can choose monthly subscription pricing of $75 per socket and $12 per VM for enterprises. Public cloud subscriptions and billing are handled through the Google Cloud Platform Marketplace and Azure Marketplace, respectively. Pricing is determined by the amount of data being protected and the frequency of backup and starts at 12¢ per GB. HYCU for Azure data protection is currently free through June 30.

Kasten Inc. has offices in the Bay Area of California and in Draper, Utah. The company's K10 platform is a backup and DR product for Kubernetes applications.
Kasten is unique in that its product was purpose-built for Kubernetes. The company didn't simply attempt to bolt Kubernetes support onto an existing product. Kasten provides a GUI management interface as well as an API that organizations can use to create custom offerings. The company also focuses heavily on security by providing features such as AWS identity and access management roles, role-based access control, OpenID Connect and enterprise-grade encryption.
Although Kasten doesn't disclose pricing information, the company offers a free Starter edition of its backup and DR software. Although this version is identical to the Enterprise edition, it's limited in scale and is licensed only for evaluation and nonproduction use.

OwnBackup Ltd. is based in New Jersey and has offices in Tel Aviv, Israel, and London. Its backup and recovery software is specifically designed to protect against Salesforce data loss and corruption.
OwnBackup for Salesforce provides comprehensive data protection to organizations that depend on Salesforce. The platform backs up data, metadata, documents, chatter feeds, knowledge articles, personal accounts, orphaned records, and attachments and files.
OwnBackup also helps to expedite the backup process. Its largest enterprise customers went from backups taking two weeks to complete to being able to create a backup in 36 hours. Although OwnBackup is designed to handle large enterprises with multiple customers and sandboxes, the software will also work for smaller organizations.
OwnBackup offers three plans that are billed annually: Enterprise, Unlimited and Governance Plus. The Enterprise plan, which is designed for SMBs, starts at $2.75 per Salesforce user, per month. The Unlimited plan, which is priced at $3.45 per user, per month, is designed for organizations that have multiple business units and need to retain data for long periods of time. The Governance Plus plan, which is designed for larger organizations that have security and compliance requirements, is priced at $6.25 per user, per month.
