Cybersecurity roadmap: What's driving CISOs' agendas for 2018
Omar F. Khawaja, CISO at Highmark Health, has five areas of focus on his cybersecurity roadmap, and technology is not at the top of the list. Instead, he is prioritizing organizational change management and building an effective decision-making framework for the security leaders of the national healthcare provider and insurer.
While Khawaja's cybersecurity roadmap may sound ambitious, his focus on risk management and team decision-making to align the security program with the healthcare organization's business strategy is far from unique. Studies show that executives increasingly recognize that a cyberattack could cripple their operations and mean millions in lost business and reputational damage as well as in cleanup costs.
"CISOs are now charged with defending this digital infrastructure, and that includes software everywhere and data as a resource, and that's a massive change at a time when the attack surface keeps expanding," says Jeff Pollard, an analyst at Forrester Research.
In this issue of Information Security magazine, security professionals detail the process of developing effective one-year plans. Why do companies struggle to strengthen their cybersecurity roadmap? We look at effective planning, what could go wrong and how to get support for your strategy.

What does a CISO do now? It's a changing, increasingly vital role
What does a CISO do in this day and age? The responsibilities of a chief information security officer, the senior executive responsible for an organization's information security program, are growing dramatically. Once relegated to the IT department -- if there was a designated corporate role at all -- the CISO is now often a member of the C-suite team, working alongside the CIO and others, formulating information security strategy and policy with an eye on both security and the business bottom line.
As the volume and sophistication of cyberattacks expand and corporate liability grows -- threatening profits and displeasing shareholders -- CISOs are now tasked with making tough decisions on how tools, systems and training are best used to manage risk. This quarterly supplement to Information Security magazine looks at the state of the CISO role -- how it's changed, where it's heading and what it takes to become an effective CISO in terms of cybersecurity skills, staff support and education.

Four technologies that could transform information security programs
With digital transformations underway in many industries, CIOs aren't the only ones who need to have the next big thing on their radar. What security innovations should you follow to ready your organization's information security programs?
The internet of things is both a security threat and potentially a security boon. Big data, machine learning and a growing number of systems with pseudo artificial intelligence may help ease the workloads of security analysts. Bitcoin's distributed database technology known as blockchain can add security to a variety of systems, but scalability remains an early concern. Quantum computing? That one may be too far out -- five years at least -- to be considered a near-term technology disruptor to enterprise information security programs.
Whether your organization is focused on manufacturing and infrastructure -- such as industrial control systems -- or consumer and information technology -- such as the internet of things -- everything is rapidly becoming connected and potentially accessible from the internet. Many information security programs are not on track for the internet of things, complex clouds and other technology disruptors. We dust off the crystal ball in this issue of Information Security magazine and ask infosec experts and venture capitalists to look into the future.

Cybersecurity careers soar with security leadership skills
Security leadership abilities are hard to quantify. Certifications and degrees may ease the way into a career in cybersecurity, but hard-won experience is usually the surer path into a role that can influence meaningful change in today's complex environments. Whether they report into the CIO or outside of the IT organization, CISOs handle growing levels of responsibilities as evolving threats and infrastructures mean higher risk and no room for staff shortages. In this Information Security issue on cybersecurity careers, we look at the path to CISO. What are the measures of success or failure in this positon? Is it worth it?
As more Fortune 5000 companies seek CISOs to handle cybersecurity concerns, larger organizations in financial services and defense industries have piqued everyone's interest with their continued investment in the human factor -- the je ne sais quoi that results in successful threat hunting. While many definitions of hunting can be found, threat hunters essentially search for the traces attackers leave behind in an IT environment, usually before any alerts of their activities are generated by security devices.
"I used to think that only the best security operations center people could be threat hunters, but that's not always true," said Anton Chuvakin, a Gartner research vice president. "The best SOC analyst may be good at responding to alerts, but they don't always have the creativity that's needed."
As automation and machine learning gain hold, technology is still no substitute for security leadership abilities and cybersecurity talent. In this issue of Information Security magazine, we look at cybersecurity careers and the best ways to build top-notch security organizations.

Machine learning in security explodes: Does it work?
Machine learning in security is continuing to advance, and many companies now claim to have introduced artificial intelligence techniques into their platforms. With the high volume of data that most security teams have to prioritize, machine learning in security technology is increasingly being adopted as a way to reduce the noise that traditional security products produce.
Smaller companies, such as Keen Footwear, have turned to threat platforms that incorporate machine learning and AI techniques -- and soon automated defense -- to solve a variety of problems. "I don't need to go hire someone dedicated to security," said Clark Flannery, director of IT at Keen's headquarters in Portland, Ore. "It just feels like a whole team back there -- who are way more qualified than [staff] I would be able to pay."
With security professionals in short supply, companies like Keen are relying on these technologies to make it easier to spot and respond to attacks. While machine learning and artificial intelligence are often used interchangeably, the concepts are different. In this issue of Information Security magazine, we discuss the nuances and dive into the current state of the technology. Machine learning in security offers information security analysts more depth of knowledge, helping to detect patterns and related analysis they may not otherwise have known about.
