How to use Liquidware FlexApp for virtual app layering

Organizations that store and deliver virtual applications separate from virtual desktops have several tools and methods they can rely on, and one option IT departments can opt for is the Liquidware FlexApp tool for application layering.

This Liquidware offering enables the administrator to split the virtual apps from the master desktop image. FlexApp also makes it easy for IT to migrate applications from different OS versions or platforms. A FlexApp layer that is made for Windows 2016 Remote Desktop Services will likely -- for most applications -- also work on Windows 10 Enterprise Virtual Desktops for Windows Virtual Desktop.

Organizations that employ app layering can use a simpler, more segmented method to roll out app and OS updates and manage master images. This method will keep the number of required master desktop images to a minimum.

This is the inherent benefit of app layering: IT only needs one desktop image and can deliver different versions of apps to different users. The Liquidware FlexApp tool comes with a Click-to-Layer feature, which enables IT professionals to layer an application only if they need to, which makes the process of updating applications that are in use a lot easier. The feature also enables IT to ensure that only the correct users can access the right versions of the software.

The video demo highlights the following features of the Liquidware FlexApp:

  • create an application layer;
  • edit an application layer;
  • publish an app layer to a user;
  • enhancing UX of the application; and
  • migrate an application layer from on-premises to cloud storage.

The video demonstrates how to migrate a layer from on-premises storage to an Azure container, but this isn't the only option. IT pros could also set up an Azure Storage container and other cloud storage providers, like Amazon Simple Storage Service, to support FlexApp layers. IT professionals can also set up FlexApp with ProfileUnity, Liquidware's profile management tool.
