ATA18 to explore the impact, potential of telemedicine

AI in healthcare will feature prominently at the 2018 ATA annual conference. The role of telemedicine in the fight against the opioid crisis will also be discussed.

The American Telemedicine Association will celebrate its 25th anniversary in the Windy City later this month with...

the world's largest annual meeting dedicated to telehealth and telemedicine.

Taking place from April 29 to May 1 at Chicago's McCormick Place, ATA18 will explore some of the most pressing concerns facing the healthcare industry today, including the transition to value-based healthcare and new ways to fight the ongoing opioid epidemic. The conference will also explore the benefits of telemedicine in an emergency and how it can expand access to healthcare in rural or underserved communities.

AI, augmented and virtual reality to be discussed

As with conferences like Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society and Radiological Society of North America, AI and machine learning will be on the agenda at ATA18, with sessions about the technology and its uses in telehealth planned for all three days of the conference. One panel will explore whether AI in healthcare can improve clinical outcomes and discuss related issues around security, privacy and regulations.

Another session will deal with augmented reality, virtual reality and telepresence, as well as how they are being applied to psychiatry and medicine. The session will define each of the three terms and their common applications, as well as the role they can play in communication and engagement.

Keynotes discuss current and future healthcare landscape

Featured speakers include Robert Wachter, MD, author of The Digital Doctor; Lisa Bielamowicz, MD, co-founder and president of Gist Healthcare; and Jo Ann Jenkins, CEO of AARP. ATA CEO Ann Mond Johnson is also slated to speak at the conference.

Wachter, along with Peter Yellowlees, MD, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of California, Davis, will discuss the evolution of healthcare and what's coming next. Jenkins will speak on a panel moderated by Johnson about the future of consumer-oriented care and what it means to address healthcare issues from the consumer's perspective.

Johnson and Bielamowicz will deliver a keynote about the current state of the healthcare landscape in the United States and the trends that are reshaping it. They will also identify strategies for success in a turbulent landscape and the role telehealth will play in its alteration.

Over 200 exhibitors will be at ATA18, with established and startup companies dealing with acute care, disaster preparedness and user-experience companies, and everything in between convening in the exhibit hall.

ATA18 will draw not just healthcare professionals like healthcare C-suite executives, physicians and nurses, but insurers, professors and researchers, financial and legal investors and more.
