Allen is recognized as an industry visionary and an expert in strategic marketing and planning, and has been an advisor to many leading organizations including Amgen, EMC, HP, Nortel, SAP, and William Blair Capital, as well as high-profile start ups such as Ask Jeeves, eGain, MatrixOne, Motive, Portera and Vignette. He specializes in bringing unique perspectives and a multi-disciplinary approach to building and refining business, market and brand strategies. Allen was formerly the director of management consulting at Extraprise, an international customer relationship management and integrated marketing firm. Prior to that, he was a practice expert and consultant at McKinsey & Company, where he worked in the firm's e-business and Media & Entertainment practices and studied online advertising effectiveness and the potential for marketing in mobile commerce environments.
He also covered the enterprise software and Internet markets at the Yankee Group, where he started and directed the firm's second Internet planning service in 1996. Earlier in his career, he managed R&D initiatives, market research and technology transfer at a major telecommunications company, and developed media relations strategies and managed high tech accounts at a B2B marketing communications agency.
