…and going back to my Veeam friends to attend VeeamON. I expect to see and talk to the Veeam leadership and product teams about the roadmap and new features they have in store. I will also spend time with end-users to discuss their experience with the solution. It is great to get first-hand feedback. I am very interested in a couple of areas in particular: data compliance and recovery testing…or actual experience dealing with an actual disaster. (more…)
Never a dull moment in the data protection market. After last week’s announcements at Dell World, Unitrends (a Kaseya company), Odaseva, Cohesity, HYCU, and Veeam have come out with interesting news.
I had the opportunity to catch up with Alex Almeida at Dell Technologies World 2019 in Las Vegas in the Data Protection booth to discuss the significant new announcements the company made at the event. Don’t miss it! (more…)
Going into Dell Technologies World, my greatest expectation was hearing a more unified message between VMware and the rest of the Dell Technologies family, especially Dell EMC. That expectation was absolutely met. Pat Gelsinger and Jeff Clarke on stage together announcing the Dell Technologies Cloud Platform was very well received and I would argue is the most united front between these two organizations that we’ve heard to date.
Dell just announced new data protection solutions at Dell Technologies World 2019. While the event is set in Las Vegas, don’t take it as an invitation to gamble with your data! Our research shows that 57% of organizations state that their tolerance for high-priority application downtime is less than 15 minutes or 15 minutes to less than one hour. In other words, no time for downtime…data protection is clearly a great business to be in!
The HYCU team has been busy in the past few quarters. A number of updates to its Google Cloud Platform (GCP) backup solution have taken place following the introduction of the innovative BaaS offering, with billing integration and advanced backup controls for example. HYCU has also expanded its reseller network and is actively targeting the enterprise space.
With Google Next 2019 coming up, there are a few items I’m looking forward to hearing about.
First and foremost, I’m excited to hear from the new GCP CEO Thomas Kurian and what his vision and plans are for the organization over the next 12-18 months. I think many in the industry understand some of the steps Google needs to make to become the cloud powerhouse it desires to be, with arguably the largest being a greater focus on hybrid cloud enablement. I think we caught a glimpse of that with the Alooma acquisition. I’m hoping to hear more about the plans for Alooma, where/how it will be integrated and some roadmap details on deeper integrations across GCP services. (more…)
I spend a lot of time in the enterprise space but there’s quite a bit going on in the SMB and the mid-market too, which are the hunting grounds of Unitrends. I recently talked to Joe Noonan about Unitrends’ strategy and focus. You can see this data protection conversation here.
This week, Unitrends, now a Kaseya company, launched an interesting new appliance that will help SMBs, mid-sized organizations, and MSPs with their data protection mandates. One of the challenges in many smaller organizations, or decentralized offices, is having local infrastructure for quick data/application recovery. (more…)
ESG’s Master Survey Results provide the complete output of syndicated research surveys in graphical format. In addition to the data, these documents provide background information on the survey, including respondent profiles at an individual and organizational level. It is important to note that these documents do notcontain analysis of the data.
This Master Survey Results presentation focuses on state of the artificial intelligence (AI) market with an IT and a data-centric lens to uncover drivers, challenges, budgets, and personas across the AI data pipeline.
Enterprise data warehouses (EDWs) are often deemed the most valuable asset in the data center, serving as the backbone of the business. The ongoing insight gained from these solutions has justified the significant up-front capital investments and ongoing operational costs, but the rigidity of the traditional EDW is forcing organizations to reevaluate their approach to analytics and business intelligence.
While legacy EDW solutions were all about throwing as much computational power as possible at a relatively static data set, with the inflow of new and valuable sources of data and the emergence of all-encompassing analytics initiatives, the success of today’s EDW solutions depends more on operational and resource agility than raw horsepower. Being able to dynamically adjust to the needs of the business, integrate into operational processes, and quickly react to emerging opportunities can place an organization at a distinct competitive advantage. Today’s EDW solutions must act as a global repository of information, provide the agility to scale up or down on demand, and seamlessly integrate with other analytics tools and services used throughout a data-driven organization.
Over the last two years, Enterprise Strategy Group has conducted detailed studies quantifying the economic value of Google data analytics services. The first evaluated Google BigQuery compared to on-premises Hadoop and AWS redshift. The second focused on Google DataProc compared to DIY Spark and Hadoop approaches. I’m happy to share the next iteration of our economic analysis, extending the BigQuery study to incorporate a comparison to legacy enterprise data warehouses, both on-premises and in the cloud.
Through publicly available pricing and in-depth qualitative customer interviews, ESG was able to assert a base set of assumptions that power a dynamic model, incorporating up-front capital investments, deployment and migration costs, expected monthly cloud costs, administrative costs, and operational costs associated with legacy on-premises EDWs, cloud-based EDWs, and Google BigQuery.
The crux of the results show organizations can save up to 52% by using BigQuery over on-premises EDWs and up to 41% over cloud-based EDWs. Unlike legacy on-premises EDWs, BigQuery provides organizations with the key abilities that are essential to delivering a modern EDW solution, most notably the ability to integrate across other Google Cloud Platform services, including its market leading AI-based solutions and services. Although we did not call it out directly in the published report, ESG’s models indicate that the savings achieved by migrating an on-premises EDW solution to Google BigQuery may actually be more cost effective than simply continuing to operate an existing on-premises EDW solution. Stay tuned for more as we continue to expand our analysis throughout the year!
