From CAD to Interactive Experience: Getting More from Your 3D Data

Most organizations can get much more value from their 3D data.

Engineering, manufacturing, product, and architecture teams often sit on extensive libraries of CAD files, BIM models, facility layouts, product designs, and other technical assets. Those files contain far more than geometry. They show how a product is assembled, how equipment fits into a facility, and how a design is expected to function.

Yet much of that value remains trapped inside specialized tools. The people who created the assets can work with them, but trainers, sales teams, operators, customers, and other stakeholders may see only a screenshot, a PDF, a video, or a static render.

That limits what the data can do. Making those assets easier to access and exploreopens new possibilities across the business.

Valuable assets, narrow access

Validating use cases can stall if organizations unintentionally recreate content that already exists.

CAD and BIM tools are built for specialized work. They help engineers manage precise product details and allow architects to coordinate complex building information. But they are not always easy for broader teams to access, navigate, or understand.

The problem grows when files are spread across local drives, disconnected asset libraries, and different engineering systems. Teams may struggle to find the latest version. Or they cannot determine whether an asset can be reused or prepare it for another purpose.

At this stage, organizations increase the possibility of unnecessary duplicates. Training teams commission new maintenance visuals, and sales teams request separate product renders. Or a facilities group builds a walk-through from floor plans. Each project starts with a different output, even though the underlying 3D data may be available.

Put your 3D data to work across the business

Interactive 3D extends the value of those assets beyond their original design or engineering context.

Consider an automotive team developing a new vehicle interface. The company may have detailed 3D models of the dashboard, controls, and interior. Instead of rebuilding those assets for each review, the team can repurpose those files into an interactive experience that lets stakeholders explore the cabin, test an HMI concept, and evaluate how drivers will interact with key features.

Source 3D data can also support design reviews, product configurators, training experiences, or customer demonstrations. A facilities team could use 3D assets to create an operational walk-through that shows where critical systems are.

“Organizations have already invested significant time and expertise in accurate 3D data. The opportunity now is to extend that value beyond engineering and design, putting the same assets to work across training, operations, sales, and stakeholder review,” said Sarah Lash, senior vice president and general manager of Industry at Unity.

Reduce the friction between asset and experience

Getting from a technical model to an interactive experience has traditionally required several handoffs. Assets may need to be converted, optimized, organized, and transferred into a development environment before a domain expert can shape the experience.

Some interactive experiences will remain lightweight. Others will grow:

  • A training prototype may eventually need custom logic or system integrations.
  • A product configurator may need to connect to pricing or inventory data.
  • A design-review experience may become part of a broader real-time 3D application.

When that happens, teams can export work created in Unity Studio to the Unity Editor and continue development without starting over. The structure, materials, lighting, and basic logic created in Studio can provide a foundation for developers to extend. This gives development teams a head start, not a rebuild.
