Technology’s ability to help both organizations and individuals achieve impressive goals that just a few short years ago seemed unimaginable is truly inspirational. Whether it’s putting a human being on the moon or surgically repairing the damaged heart of a newborn, technology’s power to enable heroic acts for the public good is undeniable.
Recognizing the “art of the possible,” organizations are turning to application modernization to drive such efforts. TechTarget’s Enterprise Strategy Group found that most application modernization efforts begin with a migration to public cloud infrastructure and that at most organizations (51%), net-new applications strategy is centered on public cloud. In fact, in today’s environment, first-generation public cloud implementations increasingly are moving to a multi-cloud model.
APJ Region: Union Bank of India
As part of a company-wide push to dramatically expand financial inclusion as a core element of its corporate mission, Union Bank of India (UBI) turned to its long-time technology partner, VMware. UBI knew it needed to modernize its applications, infrastructure, workflows and use cases to support this effort in a region where the vast majority of retail transactions remain cash-based.
To bring financial services to consumers who have not traditionally had access to such capabilities, UBI knew it needed to scale and modernize its systems in its data centers and in an increasingly multi-cloud environment. VMware helped UBI with infrastructure integration, application and data migration, and other core capabilities, speeding and expanding the rollout of new services while reducing complexity and cutting costs.
As a result of its partnership with VMware, UBI was able to speed service delivery, better demonstrate regulatory compliance, cut downtime, achieve vendor independence and modernize its application portfolio. Today, UBI’s technology landscape has evolved from an on-premises private cloud to a hybrid cloud environment that has improved agility, flexibility and scalability, with upcoming moves to support VMware Cloud on AWS and VMware Cloud Foundation.
EMEA Region: East London NHS Foundation Trust
The East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT), part of the U.K.’s National Health Service, provides a wide range of mental health and community health services. As such, it has a mandate to use technology to improve the health and well-being of its community members, particularly in responding to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A major part of ELFT’s technology strategy was its move to cloud computing in order to scale its IT infrastructure, virtualize its networks and implement a robust disaster recovery solution. To accomplish those goals, it collaborated with VMware. Already a long-time user of VMware’s vSphere virtualization platform, ELFT adopted VMware Cloud on AWS to take advantage of VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery features and VMware NSX network virtualization.
Thanks to the collaboration of ELFT and VMware staff, the transition to the cloud was done quickly, without undue impact on ELFT’s in-house technology team, and the migration went off without a hitch. The result after the migration was completed? Business as usual for the ELFT IT team and the organization’s dedicated workforce providing healthcare services to the community.
