Marc Probst named CIO of the year by CHIME, HIMSS

Intermountain Healthcare CIO Marc Probst is being recognized as CIO of the year by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).

Ahead of their annual meeting in March, they named Probst the 2019 John E. Gall Jr. CIO of the Year. Ed Kopetsky, CIO at Stanford Children’s Health in Palo Alto, Calif., was last year’s recipient.

Hal Wolf, HIMSS president and CEO, said in a news release that Probst was “blazing the trail in advancing technology to improve health and care.”

Probst has been an advocate for national patient identifiers for years, and recently took a stand before Congress after the U.S. House of Representatives repealed a nearly 20-year ban on the use of federal funds for creating a nationwide patient identifier. He argued that unique patient identifiers would make it easier to match patients to their data and reduce medical errors.

Probst has been in health IT for 30 years and is the CIO and vice president of Intermountain Healthcare, a nonprofit health system based in Salt Lake City, Utah. He has served as a consultant for Deloitte and Ernst & Young, and he served on the Federal Health Information Technology Policy Committee created by Congress in 2009 to help develop health IT policies for the U.S. government.

Probst is also a current member of the CHIME Innovation Advisory Board and has served as chairman of multiple CHIME boards and committees since 2016.
