Hyperconvergence platforms are Lego-like systems, easy to set up, scale and integrate with virtualization platforms.
These hyperconvergence products are gaining in popularity and adding features and functions as more vendors get in on the action. They've succeeded converged infrastructure, adding a management software layer to move beyond simple packaging.
However, hyperconverged systems are very proprietary. IT teams can't use their existing storage and compute when they buy a hyperconverged system. VMware's Virtual SAN (VSAN) offering -- a storage product -- converts existing infrastructure into a converged-like system. It's worth watching to see where VSAN might take the market next.
- Software-defined networking is actually happening, with real products showing up. The early decisions are between Cisco and VMware, betting on hardware and software respectively. The Linux-based Open Daylight project could shake things up if it can create some standards.
- In-memory databases are finding homes in many places. Processing in memory is faster, but it's also still more expensive and susceptible to data loss with a loss of power. Figuring out where and how to harness in-memory processing can offer benefits.
