VMware's vSAN HCI, formally Virtual SAN, pools direct-attached storage devices across the network into a distributed and shared data storage, where it maintains storage requirements -- performance, availability, etc. -- set by users, and administered and maintained by vSAN. It is a major player in the hyper-converged infrastructure software market.
With more than 20,000 organizations reported to now be using vSAN hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI), IDC's latest numbers showed it accounting for 38% of the total hyper-converged software market, with $694 million in revenue during the second quarter of 2019. That's a 40% increase year over year from the same quarter in 2018, at a growth rate 67% faster than the market as a whole.
As part of the VMware ESXi kernel, vSAN HCI runs on industry-standard x86 servers, operates across a VMware vSphere cluster and, since it is a native component of VMware virtualization, it can be enabled by users with a few clicks -- no additional software is required. VMware vSAN also enforces storage policy parameters, even if there are hardware or software failures and in spite of changes to demands placed on VM workloads.
