What are some DIMM-connected flash benefits and how do they differ from PCIe flash benefits?
DIMM-connected flash are NAND flash chips with a controller and interface that fit in a DDR3 DIMM slot. DIMM-connected flash is a lower-cost alternative to DRAM DIMM.
Companies like Diablo Technologies have redesigned server motherboards to use DIMM-connected flash on the memory bus close to the processors. This gives direct memory access and makes using flash much faster than using PCIe flash and SSDs that use standard storage protocols (FC, iSCSI, SAS, or SATA).
The ability to have direct memory access to solid-state storage can give Tier 1 applications and virtualized environments a performance boost.
