Unlike public social media platforms such as Twitter, Yammer only allows members to connect with other members who belong to the same email domain. This unique feature provides corporate employees with the ability to communicate privately, using a graphical user interface (GUI) that resembles Facebook.
Yammer was launched in September 2008 as a microblogging platform. It was purchased by Microsoft in June 2012 for $1.2 billion and is expected to be integrated with Sharepoint services. Currently, Yammer offers freemium membership, providing optional upgrades for a fee. The premium version, which comes with a small per-user license fee, includes features such as Twitter integration, private and public groups.
