AI agents are clocking into work. Seventy-nine percent of senior executives say their organizations are already adopting agentic AI, according to a recent survey by PwC, and 75% agree the technology will change the workplace more than the internet did.
If such predictions prove correct, it will soon be the rare enterprise employee who doesn't regularly interact with an AI agent or a suite of agents packaged as a "digital employee." That's likely good news and bad news for CISOs, as agentic AI promises to both support cybersecurity operations and introduce new security risks.

Cybersecurity firms are developing AI security agents with synthetic personas to make artificial intelligence more comfortable for human security teams. But experts warn that without proper oversight, such AI agents can put organizations at risk.
Companies like Cyn.Ai and Twine Security have created digital employees such as "Ethan" and "Alex," complete with faces, personas and LinkedIn pages. They function as entry-level SOC analysts, autonomously investigating and resolving security issues. Each AI worker persona comprises multiple agents, allowing it to make context-based decisions.
While they promise to help SecOps teams achieve more efficient and effective threat detection and incident response, digital analysts also require proper governance. Experts recommend that organizations deploying them should establish transparent audit trails, maintain human oversight and apply "least agency" principles.

Agentic AI demands new security paradigms as traditional access controls fail
With excessive access and insufficient guardrails, AI agents can wreak havoc on enterprise systems. Art Poghosyan, CEO at Britive, wrote in commentary on Dark Reading that security controls originally designed for human operators are inadequate when it comes to agentic AI.
For example, during a vibe-coding event hosted by agentic software creation platform Replit, an AI agent deleted a production database containing records for more than 1,200 executives and companies, then attempted to cover up its actions by fabricating reports.
The core problem, according to Poghosyan, lies in applying human-centered identity frameworks to AI systems that operate at machine speed without proper oversight. Traditional role-based access controls lack the necessary guardrails for autonomous agents. To secure agentic AI environments, he said, organizations should implement zero-trust models, least-privilege access and strict environment segmentation.

Shadow AI usage widespread across organizations
A new UpGuard report reveals that more than 80% of workers, including nearly 90% of security professionals, use unapproved AI tools at work. The shadow AI phenomenon is particularly prevalent among executives, who show the highest rates of regular unauthorized AI usage.
About 25% of employees trust AI tools as their most reliable information source, with workers in healthcare, finance and manufacturing showing the greatest AI confidence. The study found that employees with better understanding of AI security risks are paradoxically more likely to use unauthorized tools, believing they can manage the risks independently. This suggests traditional security awareness training may be insufficient, as fewer than half of workers understand their companies' AI policies, while 70% are aware of colleagues inappropriately sharing sensitive data with AI platforms.
