VMware vStorage Thin Provisioning

VMware vStorage Thin Provisioning increases virtual machine (VM) storage use through dynamic allocation and intelligent provisioning of physical storage capacity.

The product operates at the virtual machine disk file (VMDK) level, where data storage administrators can allocate VMDK files as thick or thin. Thick provisioning provides a set quantity of storage to a VM, while thin provisioning provides VM storage space as needed.

Features of VMware vStorage Thin Provisioning include:

  • The ability to convert an existing thick format to a thin format.
  • Integration with VMware vCenter Server, which lets users set thresholds to manage growth and capacity
  • Oversubscription protection

By eliminating the need to periodically request more storage, VMware vStorage Thin Provisioning helps to eliminate application downtime.
