SAP SQL Anywhere

SAP SQL Anywhere is an embedded relational database management system (RDBMS) that is designed to make it possible for database applications to run outside of traditional data centers. It is intended to run on PCs in satellite offices, mobile devices, and servers in smaller businesses such as restaurants and retail stores. The embedded database can capture billions of bits of data from IoT devices, such as sensors and other internet-enabled products, and combine it with enterprise business data. This means that data from medical devices, industrial machinery, smart meters and more can be integrated and analyzed in business applications.

A bidirectional replication technology in SAP SQL Anywhere, called Mobilink, allows data to be synchronized whenever there's a connection. Mobilink works with UltraLite, a compact RDBMS in-process database for resource-constrained platforms such as smartphones and other handheld devices. Database files are kept independent of the operating system, allowing them to be copied between supported platforms. Applications are therefore possible in industries that have remote locations or field offices that are not constantly connected to main data centers, as the remote devices can operate independently and synchronize only when there's a connection. Strong encryption helps to ensure data security.

SAP SQL Anywhere is also designed to be highly scalable both for the number of users it can support and the amount of data it can process. SAP claims the embedded database enables point-of-business applications that can run without on-premises IT staff and are low maintenance due to their self-healing and zero-administration capabilities. Because of this scalability, the size of companies that use SAP SQL Anywhere varies widely, but the software is commonly used by smaller businesses, satellite offices of large enterprises, remote and off-shore locations, and smart systems, such as ticketing kiosks for public transportation.

SAP SQL Anywhere was first released as Sybase SQL Anywhere prior to Sybase's acquisition by SAP in 2010.

It is available for download from the SAP Store and is licensed and priced by the functionality and number of users that are required at any given time.
