IT strategist (information technology strategist)

An IT strategist (information technology strategist) is someone in an organization who is given the responsibility and authority to establish initiatives that affect the organization's IT and business strategy.

While the term IT strategist generally refers to an individual, it can also refer to a steering committee. The individual or committee facilitates the technology strategic planning process for determining how IT can best benefit business outcomes. In many organizations, the IT strategist role is filled by the CIO or someone who reports directly to the CIO.  If a steering committee is used, the committee is typically chaired by the CIO.
