What are the steps for configuring SAP EWM slotting?

Slotting is not a part of the SAP Warehouse Management (WM) component of SAP Enterprise Central Component (ECC). The warehouse space optimization SAP EWM slotting process is based on the physical and storing needs of products, while also ensuring that warehouse workers can quickly and easily pick stored goods when needed.

Here are the four steps required to set up and run the SAP EWM slotting process.


The configuration step requires setting up the Warehouse Product Group by choosing the relevant parameters that the SAP Extended Warehouse Management system will consider during the slotting process. Parameters can be features such as the height, length or the width of a product that the system will consider for storing purposes. The Warehouse Product Group can also have parameters such as the physical condition required, including requirements for a dust-free environment or a need to keep the warehouse at a certain temperature. Up to 10 parameters can be chosen for the slotting process. These configured settings of the SAP EWM slotting process are subsequently assigned to the relevant warehouse.

Master data

This step entails assigning the configured Warehouse Product Groups (from the previous step) to the relevant product masters. Other data to maintain in this step is the storage requirement and a product's packaging data. Also maintained here is demand forecast data so the system is able to decide if the inventory turnover is fast enough to place the product in the storage bin for a quick and efficient retrieval.

Business processes

This step entails performing the actual SAP EWM slotting procedure via the transaction /N/SCWM/SLOT. After defining the initial parameters on the selection screen, a worklist consisting of products to-be-slotted appears (see Figure 1). It is possible to simulate the slotting process beforehand and the simulation results will show the missing or incomplete master data maintenance that will prevent the products from being slotted during the actual slotting process.

Figure 1 is the SAP EWM slotting worklist for the warehouse number 1710, where the red traffic light status denotes the products (materials) waiting for the warehouse person to initiate the slotting process.

Reporting and monitoring

Using transaction /N/SCWM/MON leads to the SAP Extended Warehouse Management dashboard where the warehouse person can check and monitor all aspects of the warehouse operations. This monitor also allows setting up user-defined alerts to ensure timely and corrective action is taken if and when a situation warrants.

Although it can help improve warehouse management, the SAP EWM slotting process in SAP ECC often leads to system's performance issues. To address this, be sure to update the system with the latest enhancement pack as well to implement to the SAP Note 1459635.

Companies planning to implement SAP S/4HANA will find that SAP EWM is a built-in component. Due to an enhanced data processing capability of SAP HANA, the slotting process no longer faces the performance issues faced in SAP ECC.
