Citrix AppDNA

Citrix AppDNA is an application testing and management technology that detects and repairs compatibility issues that would prevent applications from migrating to a virtual desktop operating system easily.

AppDNA allows XenDesktop and XenApp administrators to analyze a high volume of applications in bulk rather than manually testing each application, which can be time consuming. AppDNA analyzes how each application will perform on specific operating systems and configurations. To do so, the AppDNA software surveys an application's installer file -- an MSI file on Windows apps -- looking for compatibility issues. The installer file includes a list of the files and registry entries on the app and the actions it will perform during installation.

After testing the application's compatibility, AppDNA determines whether it needs any remediation before deployment. AppDNA can perform some smaller fixes, but for larger compatibility problems it alerts IT to the repairs the application needs and then estimates the number of hours required to fix the problem manually. AppDNA also provides information about the effect app compatibility issues will have on users, groups of users and specific devices, and it offers several options for remediation depending on the company's resources and priorities.

Organizations can also use AppDNA for application lifecycle management by retesting applications following configuration changes, patches or any other alterations.

AppDNA is compatible with Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 migrations, Microsoft App-V and Windows Server 2012, and it integrates with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager and Active Directory. AppDNA performs a similar function to Microsoft's Application Compatibility Toolkit.

AppDNA is included in the XenApp and XenDesktop Platinum editions. An alternate version of the software called AppDNA Express is available to Citrix Workspace Cloud customers.
