MindSphere is a cloud-based platform as a service (PaaS) operating system (OS) for IoT devices in industrial and manufacturing sectors used to collect data from sensors in real time. The OS was created by Siemens, an industrial manufacturing company based in Germany.
MindSphere is made for all IoT devices and gathers data from available sensors for cloud analysis to gain more information from a greater amount of data. MindSphere enables the development of apps for IoT devices through open APIs and development tools with an emphasis on ease of use, allowing manufactures to integrate their own technology.
Siemens manufactures a number of devices ready to run MindSphere, including gateways and controllers. MindSphere is easy to install and deploy but requires an installation device, such as a MindConnect Nano controller. The device is mounted to the controlled machine and power is connected. Then, Ethernet is connected to the controlled machine for an internet connection to the cloud. The remaining setup is performed through the OS online through a simple interface.
MindSphere helps ensure security and reliability with Predictive maintenance. The OS gathers the telemetry from numerous sensors within IoT devices to get instant feedback, which helps to gain more insights from real-world use rather than limited experiments into how better to configure or redesign a product. While the speed of real-time data collection helps manufacturers optimize products and manufacturing processes, it also allows equipment owners to save time and gather data without going through the manufacturer.
In August 2018, it was announced that MindSphere would be acquired by Mendix, an organization known for its low-code collaborative development platform of the same name.
