RIFAN 2

Reseau Internet de la Force Aeronavale etape 2 (RIFAN 2) is a secure internet developed for military applications. RIFAN2 connects the French navy command and its ships together in a secure network. Under RIFAN 2, data can be classified as either unprotected, secret, or NATO secret.

RIFAN 2 optimizes secure satellite and radio communication systems communication exchanges between ships, with a range of several dozen nautical miles. Multiple data streams from different connections can be unified in order to make the most of connectivity at sea. The various IP flows are encrypted at different levels and X-band satellite links are protected against jamming. Connections between the ships and mainland are both secured and monitored by either by onshore or on ship crew. Security events can be analyzed by onshore or offshore crew as well.

Deployed by the French Navy in 2018, RIFAN 2 is contracted to a group of companies with Airbus at its head. As of this writing, RIFAN is equipped on over 60 sea going vessels. Ships outfitted with RIFAN2 include aircraft carriers, frigates, patrol craft and submarines.

In English, RIFAN 2 translates to internet network of the aero-naval force, stage 2.  In June, 2019, government officials from Germany and the Netherlands signed an agreement to build a joint military internet called Tactical Edge Networking (TEN).
