ImageX

ImageX is a command-line tool that allows an administrator to capture an image of an entire hard disk drive and its files and folders in a single Windows Imaging Format (WIM) file.

Because it is file based, ImageX allows an administrator to modify the contents of an image without having to extract and recreate the image. ImageX, which is provided with the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) and Windows Setup for Vista, uses the installation kit's application programming interface (API) to install the image on other machines. With the release of Windows 7, Microsoft rolled the functionality found in ImageX into another command-line tool called Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM).

ImageX has eleven different commands:

append - adds an image to an existing Windows image (.wim) file.

apply - applies an image to a specified disk drive.

capture - captures an image from a hard drive as a new .wim file.

delete - deletes a specified image from a .wim file

dir - displays a list of the files and folders within a specified image.

export - exports a copy of the specified .wim file to another .wim file.

info - returns the stored XML descriptions for the specified .wim file

split - splits an existing .wim file into multiple read-only split .wim files (.swm).

mount - mounts a .wim file with read-only permission to a specified directory.

mountrw - mounts a .wim file with read/write permission to a specified directory.

unmount - unmounts a mounted image from a specified directory.
