Nice segway — or nice segue?
Writing for Business
Which is correct?
Telecom carriers are increasingly making a ______ into cloud services.
a. segway
b. segue
Answer: b
Explanation:
A segue (from Italian for “it follows”) is a transition. A segway, on the other hand, is a personal transport device.
Language Log writes about people thinking that “segue” is a verb created from “segway” and spelled the same way. One guy was playing Buzzword bingo in a meeting and, upon hearing someone say “segue” thought it was a newly coined buzzword:
“Yet buzzwords have sunk lower than we ever thought possible. Overheard in a recent fluffette meeting was (albeit by a client) the use of the word Segway as a verb. As in “Oh I guess now’s the time to just Segway into that issue a little”.
