Department of Space (India)

The Department of Space (DoS) is a department created by the Indian government to manage their space program and oversee a number of related agencies and institutes. The department’s vision statement specifies that its purpose is to use space technology for national development. It asserts that the pursuit of space science research and planetary exploration is an effort toward the socio-economic benefit of the country.

The DoS is responsible for two major satellites systems: the Indian National Satellite system (INSAT), for communications, TV, meteorological services; and the Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites system, for monitoring and managing resources. India developed satellite-launching vehicles Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).

The DoS was created in 1972 by the newly constituted Space Commission and oversees 19 space agencies and institutes across the country. The department took over responsibility of the previous Indian Space Research Organization, which remains as the main research and development branch of the DoS and handles research and development for the department. On August 15, 2018, the country's Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans for India to launch its first manned mission to space by 2022.
