product footprint

The product footprint is an assessment of the impact a particular product has on the environment.

The product footprint is a primary concern of product lifecycle sustainability, an approach to managing the stages of a product’s existence so that any negative impact on the environment is minimized. Ideally, a product will be carbon neutral or even carbon negative, having the net effect of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

One goal of sustainability may be a closed-loop product lifecycle, in which all elements that go into the creation of a product are reused, recycled or remanufactured rather than discarded.

A product footprint is sometimes known as a product environmental footprint or a product carbon footprint.
